Course Info:  In Thinking Like a Trainer, Part 1, dog training students will learn about the language used to describe the theory behind operant learning (learning theory) and how to recognize what they are seeing. For those interested in gaining better insight into LEARNING THEORY, this course is what you are looking for. Through lecture, video demonstrations, quizzes, and a written assignment, dog training students will leave this course with a thorough understanding of the language and terminology used in operant learning and learning theory.

The 6 Week Dog Group Class for Trainers

How to develop and teach a 6 week dog group class for Trainers…in 7 weeks.

Purpose: To teach beginning or novice group dog trainers a formatted dog group class experience that can be adapted for indoor and outdoor environments.

Course Information: The Six Week Group Class For Trainers course is designed to outline a specific progression for teaching group dog training clients the basic skill set their dogs need to learn before any advanced training — therapy, service, sports, other. The format can be followed exactly or adapted by more experienced trainers.

There are 7 lessons in this course. Each lesson has a quiz and a homework assignment. You will be expected to complete all of the assignments. Some of the homework will be video homework (i.e., you will video your assignment and send the video over the internet to be graded). Basic Dog Training Skills and Theory Using Positive Methods

Purpose: This class will teach you the fundamentals of training a dog the basics all dogs should know. The techniques to be applied are based on developing and strengthening a trusting relationship between the human and the dog using positive reinforcement.

Course Information: This class is designed for the beginning dog trainer who wants to learn how to teach a dog the basic skills and behaviors all dogs should know. It is best used with any dog over the age of six months who has never taken a training class before or needs a refresher on basic manners. The trainer will learn how to precisely signal a dog’s correct response with a small hand-held “clicker” and reward the behavior so that it will more likely happen again. Obedience exercises such as sit, stand, down, and stay are introduced, as are loose-leash walking, polite greetings, “leave-it”, attention and the really reliable recall – skills crucial to the pet dog living in our society. The trainer will gain a better understanding of what dogs need and can be expected to achieve dogs in the household. Problem behaviors are also covered such as jumping, digging, barking, housebreaking, etc.

CANINE COGNITION

Purpose: To provide a deeper understanding of canine cognition through discussion of recent scientific progress in this field.

Course Information: Canine Cognition is a six week course appropriate for anyone who wishes to have a better understanding of how dogs ‘think’. Over the last decade, regained scientific interest in the domestic dog has produced a wealth of new information on how dogs perceive and interact with their environment and other animals and people in it. Cognitive research that had previously been reserved for humans and non-human primates was extended to include dogs and with striking results. In this course we will explore what is now known about canine cognition including: Reasoning skills, language capabilities, imitation, social cognition and theory of mind. We will also discuss ideas for how this information might allow us to improve our interactions with dogs in a variety of settings and identify areas where more research is needed. Participants will need to complete homework, video demonstrations, quizzes and a final exam.

Canine Biology and Behavior – Parts 1- 3

Purpose: To provide ground level knowledge for understanding canine biology, behavior, elements of the theory underlying training methods, and to prepare students for other academic or animal training courses.

 Course Information: This course covers basic canine biology (with a focus on the nervous system, genetics and evolution) and behavior (both natural and learned).  In part I of the series the student will become knowledgeable about canine biology (anatomy and physiology) and appreciate how this biology affects behavior.  Both the general-common and breed-specific canine behaviors will be explored in part I and part II of the series. In part II, taxonomy, evolution, genetics, and hormonal influences are covered. In part II the students will understand the science behind behavioral studies, as well behind the behavior modification, including current trends.  Participants will read, critique research and training methods, perform and report on activities, including write observations, analyses, and reflections. Students will come away with a broad new understanding of the canine species in a scientific, social, and practical perspective.

Prerequisites: of the three course series, the first I has no prerequisiste, but the II, an III course series requires the previous in the series. It is helpful to have had a general biology or psychology course, and an animal training course.

Problem Behaviors-Theory and Skills Using Positive Methods

Purpose: This course will teach both a novice dog trainer how to use positive methods to change problem behavior.

Course Information: This course will teach students how to use positive methods to work with common problem behaviors. This course does not address aggression or aggressive dogs. The top problem behaviors this course will address are jumping, house-training, pulling on the leash, excited or fearful urination, too excited with visitors, barking, digging, hates being left at home, bothering its people during dinner, guarding food, getting in the garbage (or places he is not supposed to be), and stealing food from counters.
