Dog Breeders Academy
Advanced Membership
The Dog Breeders Academy (DBA) is a professional organization that recognizes dog breeders based on their dedication to ensuring the puppies they breed and place are as mentally and socially healthy as possible through their own education in proper breeding, socializing of puppies in the first 8 weeks of life, placement in forever homes; and, education for their new puppy owners. We believe that through education, we can increase the chances that a puppy will be more likely to begin life with proper socialization with humans in both its birth home and adopted home.
Breeder Accreditation
Breeders earn the right to be an Accredited breeder through education of yourself and by ensuring your new puppy-owners have early and proper education. A Dog Breeders Academy graduate has the well-being of the dogs they produce first and foremost for the life of that dog.
Our Code of Conduct is a guide for ethical breeding practices.

- Are you a reputable and conscientious breeder?
- Have you always studied and selected the best possible breeding; screen potential homes, guarantee the health of your puppies; and help with early training advice?
- Do you spend hours personally, through email, or on the telephone with your new puppy buyers helping with training or good manners issues?
- Do you want to make sure the knowledge of how to teach basic manners to puppies are taught to your new puppy owners while the puppy is still young and in the critical learning stage (8-16 weeks)?
- Do you often wish there was some way to recognize and reward you for being a GOOD breeder to potential new puppy homes?
- …..Most importantly, are you dedicated to placing and keeping your puppies in a forever home?
The Dog Breeders Academy (DBA) graduate provides breeders recognition for being a conscientious and reputable breeder who has the happiness of the dog they have produced on this earth as their first and foremost priority.
We are not here to put down the importance of breeding for conformation or performance abilities. Those are for others to police. Our goal is to make sure EVERY dog, purebred, mix, pet or show has educated owners who will provide the best possible environment for that dog from day one!
We are not here to put down the importance of dog training centers or pet professionals. We are here to hopefully decrease the incidence of dogs who need a Behavior Counselor to help with a behavior that we are going to avoid developing in the first place!
There is no other professional organization today that EDUCATES and rewards breeders by accrediting and listing them in an accredited breeder directory based on their dedication toward ensuring forever homes through educated owners.
Dog Breeders Academy (DBA) graduates are breeders who go out of their to make sure: (1) they do the best breeding in the first place and that they have homes for those puppies before the breeding takes place; (2) the puppies are properly socialized from 0-8 weeks; (3) new owners are screened prior to placement; (4) subscribe and abide by a Code of Conduct; and, (5) provide education of new owners through puppy classes in the early weeks in their new homes.

Incentive/Rebate Puppy Program
By Cheryl L. Asmus, Ph.D.
Incentive/Rebate Puppy Training Program:
- Why would you charge extra money for your puppies and then rebate some of that purchase price for puppy owners who complete puppy training classes?
Because...... Spending money and getting money back has a strong tendency to encourage people to follow through on something.
By charging extra for your puppies, providing free puppy training coupons, and then rebating a portion of their purchase price after successful graduation from those puppy training classes, your new puppy homes will KNOW that you are an ethical breeder who cares enough for your puppy's future to put your money where your mouth is.
The first several weeks in the puppy's new home, away from his littermates and mother, is a critical development period for the bond between that puppy and humans. Not only is it a critical development period for the human-canine bond, it is also a critical learning period for both puppy and new owner.
What is learned in the first few weeks at a new home? Almost everything!
- House training
- Crate training
- Respect (chewing, digging, barking, jumping, nipping)
- Manners
- Whether to fear a human or make a trusting bond with a human
- Basic learning skills (sit, down, off, leave it, wait, leash walking, come, etc.)
E-Training for Dogs now provides breeders with the ability to provide new puppy and new owner (8 weeks to 6 months) classes anywhere in the world, to learn, right in the home where that new relationship is first ingrained.
We also know how expensive this can be. SO, we have a couple options available to you. (Breeder gets one course free with each packet order.)
Option One: One 90 minute online Class-Raise Your New Puppy: The Ten Easy Steps (Packs of 10 only: $45 or $5 each). This class is viewed online. Each has unlimited access for 4 months.
Option Two: Six to eight week "breed or performance specific" puppy classes. (Packs of 10 only: $1,490 or $155 each. These normally sell for $237.50 each.). These classes are taught by expert trainers in the specific areas. They are also viewed online and the student has unlimited access for 4 months. Examples:
Training Your Pet Puppy (ages 8-16 weeks)
Training Your Toy Puppy (ages 8-16 weeks)
Training Your Show Puppy
Training Your Retriever Puppy
Training Your Pointing Puppy
Training Your Herding Puppy
Training Your Schutzhund/Protection Puppy
Here is what we suggest (example):
- Buy one of the above Packages from us when you are expecting a litter.
- We will send you the purchased number of coupons ONLY.
- In your Puppy Packet, provide all of your first time dog owners (or all buyers!) one of these Coupons for a FREE Training Your Puppy course.
- Incentivize them to Train their Puppy: Price your Puppy $10-$100 higher than normal.
- Pay them to complete the class: In your Puppy Contract, offer a REBATE of $10-$80 back when they can send you a copy of a Certification of Completion of the FREE Puppy course you provided them. You may consider providing them with a bigger incentive if they do the class within the first week of having their new puppy home.
- Stress to buyers that these coupons cost you money and that if they are not going to take the Course, to please not take the coupon, but still charge them the extra money for the puppy.
- This is called putting your money where your mouth is! Incentives work! People will take these classes and be better owners from the very beginning!
Why would you do this?! What is in this for YOU?!?
This is a marketing no-brainer!!!
- The puppy and new owners will be happier!
- You will become known as a reputable breeder who is dedicated to keeping their new puppy families stay together.
- You will be putting your money where your mouth is!
- You will be eligible to be listed as an Accredited Breeder with the APPCS.
- You will have a waiting list for your litters.
- Your puppies will be less likely to end up in a shelter or rescue.
- You, the breeder will know your new puppy’s owners will have the knowledge and skills to start their puppy off right.
- New puppy buyers will know they are safe in their purchase from an Associate or Accredited Breeder.
Choose Your "Type" of Puppy Class!!!!
(Not available in the Promo Pack)
Training Your Pet Puppy (8-16 weeks) This class is designed for the new puppy owner for those first few critical months. Owners will learn the importance of early socialization and how best to properly introduce a puppy to new situations and environments. We will address common puppy issues such as house-training, nipping, jumping, and chewing; as well as learn fundamentals such as sit, down, stand, short stays, leave it, come when called, and the basics of loose leash walking.
Training Your Toy Puppy (8-16 weeks) This class is designed for the toy dog owner. This course will ensure that Toy Puppies learn their basic manners to help them grow up to be secure and well mannered companions. Students will learn: house-training, the training equipment; lift and emergency lift; attention/auto check in; leave it; chewing and mouthing; handling; walking on a lead; sit and stay; come when called; emergency come; meeting new people and animals (in and outside of the carrier); settle; socialization; and, preventative health care and feeding since toy puppies require so much more attention than the larger breeds.

Our Instructors have over 30 years experience in dog and puppy training.
How Does the Puppy Incentive/Rebate Program Work?
As long as you continue to provide puppy packets (or other approved incentive/rebate puppy training) for all of your litters, maintain your ETD and APPCS membership and abide by the APPCS Code of Conduct:
- We allow you to use the ETD and/or APPCS logo (depending on your Level of graduate) and Certification on your website…buyers will know they are buying the best puppy and that you are a conscientious breeder who supports the ongoing welfare of your puppies and their forever homes.
- Once you achieve a Level, we will list you on our Directory of Accredited Breeders, searchable by breed and country, state, province or region.
- Once you are Level III we will also provide a free business card sized ad for you in our quarterly journal under the Breeder’s section.
NOTE: If there is a substantiated complaint by a puppy buyer, you will lose all Academy of Dog Breeder and APPCS privileges immediately (this assures puppy buyers that you are reputable and accountable)
Why are we doing this special offer? We at E-Training for Dogs, Inc. and the Association of Professional Pet Care Specialists believe very strongly that education of breeders and new puppy owners is critical to the ongoing success of the dog in our society.
We believe that by working with conscientious breeders and new owners of all dogs that we can play a small part in keeping dogs in their forever homes.

The necessity for effective dog breeding, early socialization practices, placement and education of new owners continues to grow. Across the country, a raft of programs aimed at reducing the number of dogs in rescues or shelters is underway. All of these programs are well-intentioned. Most try to reduce the number of dogs in shelters through spay/neuter programs; in other words, these programs try to reduce the number of dogs….period. No program that we are aware of has tackled the problem from a strictly educational standpoint: educating breeders and new owners to reduce the number of dogs that end up in shelters or rescues.
Many new puppy owners are not interested in learning formal obedience exercises to teach their puppies. In addition, many dog obedience schools are not safe for a puppy until he has had all of his vaccinations. Yet, the puppy begins to learn his place in a new home the minute he arrives! New owners need to know how to make that a healthy and lasting bond in their own homes, immediately....not 2-3 months later, after all kinds of behaviors have been set.
Every 8-week old puppy needs to learn basic manners first. For dogs destined to be more than pets, such as a hunting or show dog, there are certain experiences they need to learn in their early critical first days with their new human companion. However, all dogs must learn basic manners...pet, show or performance dogs.
Now, as never before, more and more dogs are bought and sold over the internet. This can be good as more breeders are able to find the perfect homes for their puppies or dogs, and more buyers are able to find the perfect dog or puppy.
This can also be bad, as more breeders are not able to give the new owners personal help with raising and training their puppies; and, buyers have no way of knowing if the breeder is reputable or how (and if!) the puppy has been socialized in the first critical 8 weeks of life.
