Obedience: Positive Reinforcement Series
Course Title: Dogs I: Training Your Dog the Positive Way
Prerequisites: Dog must be 6 months or older and have NEVER taken a training class before.
Purpose: Teach your dog basic obedience by developing and strengthening a trusting relationship between you and your dog using positive reinforcement.
What you can expect to learn from this Course:
- Understand how dogs learn and how to use equipment
- Learn to use a clicker and positive reinforcement
- Learn the skills needed tocontinue training your dog throughout its development
- Learn to teach your dog to sit, down, stand, attention, loose lead walk, leave it, recall, stay, and end unwanted behaviors such as jumping and barking.

- Dogs I: February 5, 2007 through March 26 (1PM-2PM EST) REGISTRATION: Closed
- Cost: $200.00 (Live sessions are $25 each and this course runs 8 sessions)
- There is an additional $100.00 cost for a kit that is required for this course. (THIS KIT IS A ONE TIME PURCHASE AS IT APPLIES TO ALL CLASSES IN THE POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT OBEDIENCE SERIES). If you have previously taken a course in the Positive Reinforcement Series, you will only pay for the manual (additional $20.00) This kit includes the following special training tools to be shipped to you after you register:
- leash
- harness
- limited slip collar
- stuffable toy
- clicker
- face wrap
- class manual

Course Info:
This class is designed for any dog over the age of six months who has never taken a training classes before or needs a refresher on basic manners.The owner will learn how to precisely signal his dog's correct response with a small hand-held "clicker" and reward the behavior so that it will more likely happen again. Obedience exercises such as sit, stand, down, and stay are introduced, as are loose-leash walking, polite greetings, "leave-it", attention and the really reliable recall - skills crucial to the pet dog living in our society. The owner will gain a better understanding of what dogs need and can be expected to achieve dogs in the household.
Instructor: Susan Sharpe, A.P.D.T; C.P.D.T.; CA-1
Susan Sharpe, A.P.D.T; C.C.P.D.T.; CA-1 is co-owner and head instructor for Canine Companion by Certified Trainers. She has over 20 years of experience in dog training. Her background includes obedience, article search, tracking, obstacle course, drug detection, personal preotection, and family pet manners. Susan offers group classes, private instruction, and behavior modefication from minor issues, such as unwanted barking, through more severe behaviors including separation anxiety and aggression. She also instructs therapy dog courses and trains service dogs for individuals. Susan is an instructor for the American Red Cross (#12642), including being an instructor for emergency pet first aid. She is a graduate of the Purdue University DOGS! course, a certified Tellington Touch CA-1 practitioner and is a Certified Pet Dog Trainer with the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Susan is an evaluator for Therapy Dog Inc. as well as a Canine Good Citizen evaluator for the Amerian Kennel Club (#8968). She is the developer of the famous anxiety wrap. She and her dog Skye Ladd hold duel registries with Delta Society and Therapy Dog Inc. Susan spent 17 years in the corporate world before leaving it to work with animals as a full time career.
Student Information
We do not recommend taking a course if you have access to the internet
ONLY through a dial-up modem. The speed is just too slow and you will
not have a good experience. HOWEVER, you can go to the local library
or public areas with free wireless “areas” such as hotel lobbies
or coffee houses and take your course. You will need to bring your
cell phone. Though the call is toll-free to teleconference, depending
on your wireless cell phone service plan, you may be charged for the
minutes.
Check out the availability to have wireless through Direct TV or Satellite
installed at your home. The costs are getting more reasonable every
day.

Necessary Downloads Prior to taking a course:
- You will need to allow ActiveX to be installed on your computer (you will be prompted before logging in to a class if you need it).
- You will also need a media player for audio and video. Download the free Microsoft Media Player or Quicktime Player .
