Search and Rescue Area Search Training

Purpose: To teach the students how to train their dog for area search . This class will help handlers train their dogs to be efficient in area search. You can work on scent specific or non-scent specific area search.

Prerequisites: None. This class is for puppies 10 weeks or older or adult dogs up to 5.

Course Information: This class is for beginners and intermediates who wish to learn the many aspects of area searching. You will learn about Incident Command, search strategy, how to train reliable refinds and much more. This class will help troubleshoot problems that the students are experiencing during their training. I will be showing lots of video for demonstration purposes.  It will help if you are able to upload videos to show your dog working, (You will receive plenty of help to assist you if you would like to do this.)

Course Length: 5 (five) one and 1/2 hour sessions meet weekly for five weeks. See the starting dates above for the first class dates. Classes will meet on the same day, same time each week.

Certification/For Credit-You will participate fully in the class with homework for you and your dog. You will send in videos or narration about your progress each week.  You will learn using "hands on" with the instructor examining and providing individualized feedback, attention, and assistance on course material.
Audited-You will participate fully in the class with no required homework or tests. The instructor will not provide any assistance out of class such as viewing your videos in order to be able to give you individualized feedback.

  • Managing the Search/ techniques for segmenting, deploying search dogs
  • Step by step instruction each week.
  • We will teach the dog to independently search without relying on the handler to direct them.

Instructor: Janet Wilts For the last 20 years, Janet Wilts has been employed by Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, as a Law  Enforcement Ranger and Climbing Ranger. She is now the Law Enforcement Specialist.  As a climbing ranger she was responsible for responding to the technical Rescue's, accidents and searches in Grand Teton National Park. She worked front country LE for the  South District and responded to law enforcement incidents.  
Janet had worked in Search and Rescue for over 30 years. She started working technical rescue and searching in Yosemite National Park. Janet is a  member of High Country Search Dogs and until recently a member of Wyoming K-9 SAR. Janet has trained 5 of her own search dogs and has been training search dogs for 20 years.
As a member of High Country K-9 and Wyoming K-9 Search & Rescue she helped to develop the testing criteria and standards. Janet has tested and certified more then 100 dogs, including HC K-9 members, Tri-state testing groups, other dog groups and Ski Patrol. As an instructor for High Country Search Dogs she has conducted seminars in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, California, South Dakota, Texas, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and instructed the following topics: trailing, advanced cadaver/HRD, beginning SAR dog training, beginning cadaver, avalanche, water, rappelling with K-9's, K-9 drives, scent theory, wilderness search, search strategy and advanced wilderness search.
