Herding Dogs 2: Basic Training and Skill Building

Purpose/Goal: To solidly establish the basic herding skills, calm stock handling and to develop a working partnership between you and your dog.

Pre-requisites: Dog and Handler must have all the skills taught in the course Herding Dogs I: Building the Foundation. Puppies at least 5 months old, and dogs of any age may participate.

Live—You will speak to the instructor in an online “classroom” with other students. Choose from the listed times in the Course Registration box above.
OnDemand/Recorded—Watch classes "OnDemand"- at your own pace. Click on "OnDemand/Recorded Session" under "Register for Recorded Class" above.

Certification/For Credit-You will participate fully in the class with required homework and tests. You will send in homework (may include video) to learn "hands on" with the instructor examining and providing individualized feedback, attention and assistance on course material.
Audited-You will participate fully in the class with no required homework or tests.
The instructor will not provide any assistance out of class such as viewing your videos in order to be able to give you individualized feedback.

Course Info:This course will teach you how to begin working together with your dog to handle livestock. Your dog’s natural instincts for herding will be developed, while teaching your dog to look to you for guidance. You will learn the basic herding skills and how to teach them to your dog. You will be handling your dog on a long line, using clear communication, body language and a clicker or voice to affirm your dog’s successful attempts of the lesson at hand.

What you can expect to learn from this Course:

• Understand the interaction of dog and sheep, and their response to one another.
• Learn the basic herding skills and verbal cues: what they mean and how to use them. (That’ll do, Stop, Stay, Flanks - Come Bye and Away to Me, Steady, Lift)
• Teach your dog to look to you for leadership thru exercises off stock.
• Learn how to teach your dog flanking basics off stock.
• Understand and practice the principles of good handling.
• Introduce your dog to stock and teach the basic skills using a long line.
• Learn how to develop mindful, keen and workman-like behavior in your dog.
• Nurture a strong partnership between you and your dog.

Instructor Profile: Kathy Kawalec owns and operates Dancing Hearts, a holistic training and well-being center in Manhattan, Illinois. Kathy’s methods for teaching dogs and handlers, are based upon clear communication, understanding and respect, and are effective and positively reinforcing to dog and handler alike!

Kathy has successfully competed in all venues of herding events including USBCHA, AKC, ASCA and AHBA with her border collies for more than 10 years. Currently trialing in National Level fields trials sanctioned by The United States Border Collie Handlers Association, she has qualified for and competed in the National Finals, limited to the top dogs in the country.

Facilitating clinics and lessons both at her farm in Illinois, and around the Midwest, she has experience with all herding breeds, and her students have won many titles and ribbons competing in all venues.

Kathy’s methods focus on keeping the dog in a calm, focused, eager-to-learn state of mind – which helps the dog learn, and helps the handler to learn too!
