Herbal Remedies and Aromatherapy

Purpose: Learn the safe and appropriate use of herbs and aromatherapy for pets.

Course length: 3 recorded (OnDemand) classes and 1 Live (online) class.

Course Info: There are three recorded classes with extensive video demonstrations. Upon completion of these three classes students are required to join a live webinar where they will have the opportunity to speak directly with the instructor.
Live webinars are held monthly. Days and times vary from month to month so students will receive a list of upcoming dates and times at the same time that they receive the access links to the three recorded classes.

What you will learn:

  • The history of herbology.
  • How to source good quality herbs from reputable sources and what those herbs should look, smell and taste like.
  • How to grow common herbs in their garden.
  • What parts of the plant havehealingproperties;contraindications and precautions when using herbal remedies; the most beneficial form of each herbal remedy including learning how to prepare dried herbs, powders, teas, infusions and compresses.
  • How to use herbal remedies to provide solutions for common ailments – behavioural issues such as anxiety, nervousness and fear; digestive upset including nausea, flatulence, constipation, impacted anal glands and diarrhea; parasite problems; lesions of the skin.
  • How to use herbal remedies to help elderly animals cope with the infirmities of old age such as arthritis, cataracts, dental issues, heart disease, kidney disease and incontinence.
  • The qualities of aromatherapy oils, blending of aromatherapy oils, what are carrier oils and how to use them, contraindications and precautions with the use of aromatherapy.

Participants will be provided with a manual of useful herbs and recipes as well as a comprehensive list of useful books and resources.

Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion after attending the Live Webinar with Sigle.

Instructor: Sigle (Sheila) Skeries has an Honours Bachelor of Arts in educational psychology with 20 years teaching experience and over 30 years experience in the animal industry. A successful junior career on the hunter / jumper circuit in Ontario and throughout the USA followed by upper level Eventing training inSigle Skeries England, qualification as a British Horse Society Intermediate Instructor, and the management of equine facilities in breeding, racing, training and showing ensures a well rounded and knowledgeable approach not only to rehabilitation but the specific needs and demands of a wide variety of disciplines. Sigle’s canine partners are St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs and they participate in a number of canine activities including tracking, agility, freestyle and trick training. Her qualifications in therapeutic massage have been secured through training at The Complementary Therapies School in Gerrards Cross, England and successful completion of the ITEC licensing examinations. She is a member of the British Complementary Medicine Association, Independent Professional Therapists International and the Guild of Complementary Practitioners. Sigle has successfully completed her training in Herbal Medicine through the East West School of Herbal Medicine based in Ben Lamond, California.
