DS207: Vet Clinic Puppy Manners and Socialization

Purpose/Goal: To prepare students to begin training; and educate their clients how to have their puppies grow to be good community members.

Pre-requisites: Vet Tech; or have a desire to help the public with their puppies at a veterinary clinic; some common knowledge about dog safety, health, and nutrition

Course Info: This train the trainer course will teach you step by step instruction to help you hold classes within a veterinary clinic near you. It focuses on training Vet Techs (or others) to assist vet clinic clients in early puppy education, dealing with safety, health and nutrition, puppy manner imprinting, socialization, and general puppy care. Learn to become a Veterinary Clinic Puppy Imprinting and Socialization trainer!

Course Length: 8 one-hour sessions

Instructor: Jan Bradfeldt, has been associated with dog training since 1971 and has instructed  for  Emerald Dog Obed. Club (EDOC) since 1972. Her college studies are in behavior modification, psychology and animal science. Jan graduated from Oregon State Univ. in 1976. She is currently teaching puppy imprinting classes for 3 local veterinarians and also a public Canine Good Citizen Prep Class. Jan also teaches a weekly Show Conformation class for EDOC.  Jan has done training with the Delta Society for therapy dogs and is currently a Canine Good Citizen evaluator for the AKC.  Her first German Shorthaired Pointer was given to her 48 years ago. Jan and her husband still train and compete in many dog activities including, Obedience, Rally, Agility, Show Conformation, AKC hunt tests, CGC and Animal Assisted Therapy work. Jan spent 20 years in the corporate world as a Hazardous Materials Regulatory Shipping Specialist before leaving it to work with dogs and their owners full time.

Jan currently has several top winning German Shorthaired Pointers as well as an English Cocker Spaniel.

For Credit-You will participate fully in
the class with required homework and tests.
You will send in video homework to learn
"hands on" with the instructor examining and providing individualized feedback, attention and assistance on course material.

Audited-You will participate fully in
the class with no required homework or tests.
The instructor will not provide any assistance
out of class such as viewing your videos in
order to be able to give you individualized
feedback.

NOTE: We will be providing Certification for Professional Dog Trainers in the near future (planned for FALL of 2008). This course is worth 3 credits and can be applied to Certifcation once we are approved by the Colorado Department of Higher Education. Only the "For Credit" courses can be applied to Certification.
