DH205/TD301: Toy Dog Health and Care

Toy dogs are different than their larger counter parts. Learn about their unique medical, orthopedic, dental, nutrition, growth and safety issues and how to best care for them.

Course Info: The first in a series of  the Toy Dog Series where we will focus on the different toy breeds, their function (jobs) and discuss issues pertaining specifically to toy puppies and toy dogs.

Prerequisites:Basic understanding of how dogs learn. Training Kit $75.00. See below to order.

Live—You will speak to the instructor in an online “classroom” with other students. Choose from the listed times in the Course Registration box above.
OnDemand/Recorded—Watch classes "OnDemand"- at your own pace. Click on "OnDemand/Recorded Session" under "Register for Recorded Class" above.

Certification/For Credit-You will participate fully in the class with required homework and tests. You will send in homework (may include video) to learn "hands on" with the instructor examining and providing individualized feedback, attention and assistance on course material.
Audited-You will participate fully in the class with no required homework or tests.
The instructor will not provide any assistance out of class such as viewing your videos in order to be able to give you individualized feedback.

    Toy Dog Training Equipment ($75): The right tools are necessary to gain the desired results. This kit includes 2 clickers; a retractable target stick; a step-in harness; 6 foot leather shoelace lead; and the Training & Behavior Manual for Toy Dog Instructors (Carranco, S.)     Is a Certified Pet Dog Trainer and has been working with dogs professionally since 1999.  After a long career as a Meeting and Event Planner, she focused on teaching dogs, which evolved quickly to become a Holistic Dog Trainer with a specialty in Toy/Small breeds. She takes a holistic approach to teaching andShana Carranco care of dogs, believing in the balance of mind, body, environment to build and enhance the human/canine relationship.  She is also very interested in natural diets and remedies for pets, knowing there is a strong link between behavior and nutrition.

    She instructs weekly Puppy Socials, and Lifeskills Lessons, private consultations and conducts workshops and seminars to the public and canine education instructor training programs to trainers, enthusiasts and those who are interested in becoming dog trainers. In addition, she is a Certified Groomer, Pet First Aid & CPR Instructor for PetTec, AKC – CGC Evaluator, and founder of Miami Toy Dog Training Club.

    She has been published several times in the Stuart News, and was recently interviewed for a DVD production on Meet the Professionals, which will air on cable in 2008. Author of:  Shana Carranco, The Holistic Dog Trainer™ Presents: The First 48 Hours with Your New Toy Puppy (available for download) and soon to be available: Toy Dogs: Training, Behavior and Beyond!
