Course Info: Canine Cognition is a six week course appropriate for anyone who wishes to have a better understanding of how dogs ‘think’. Over the last decade, regained scientific interest in the domestic dog has produced a wealth of new information on how dogs perceive and interact with their environment and other animals and people in it. Cognitive research that had previously been reserved for humans and non-human primates was extended to include dogs and with striking results. In this course we will explore what is now known about canine cognition including: Reasoning skills, language capabilities, imitation, social cognition and theory of mind. We will also discuss ideas for how this information might allow us to improve our interactions with dogs in a variety of settings and identify areas where more research is needed.

Instructor: Monique Udell, MS is a PhD candidate in Psychology-behavior analysis at the University of Florida specializing in canine social cognition and behavior. As a pre-vet student at Stetson MoniqueUdellUniversity, Monique studied both biology and psychology where she became interested the social behavior of animals.  In 2006 she helped develop the Canine Cognition and Behavior Lab at the University of Florida, where she is presently investigating the role of environment and experiential factors that influence the development of the domestic dog’s sensitivity to human gestures and attentional state. Monique has studied the interactions between humans and a number of domesticated and non-domesticated species including domestic dogs, wolves, coyotes and bats leading to national and international conference presentations and scientific journal publications. Her work has also been featured in The Economist, New Scientist, and APA Monitor on Psychology among others. In addition to her research, Monique is an experienced dog trainer and teacher. She believes that a deeper understanding of canine cognition and human-canine interactions can result in even more effective and enjoyable relationships with dogs. –View Website-
