Diploma in Canine Breeding and Genetics
Purpose: This Certificate/Diploma is designed for breeders, dog professionals or individuals interested in enhancing their study of dogs. Emphasis will be on the biology, evolution, genetics, and the early environmental influences on dogs.
Certificate/Program Goals
• To understand the links between behavior and the origin, evolution, genetics and biology of the dog.
• To understand how the evolutionary background, biology, and genetics, impact canine behavior.
• To understand how the early experiences of canines impact their behavior.
• To understand how the prenatal and postnatal environment can be optimized to affect a canine's development and behavior.
• Gain an understanding of basic genetics.
Program Curriculum (Courses Required)
Dog Orgin and Early History Using easily understood information from biology, genetics, animal behavior, and anthropology, this course invites critical examination of the support for the
two most likely theories about the origin of the domestic dog. The development of distinct breeds from early generalized landraces is also discussed. Six (6) one hour sessions. Available Live or OnDemand. Click HERE for more information.
Breeding and Whelping This course encourages and seeks to educate present and future breeders. It is not a genetics course. It does provide resources for breeders that includes: choosing breeding stock; when and how to breed two dogs; taking care of the pregnant dog; preparing for whelping; whelping a litter; how to deal with emergencies; and post partum concerns. One 90 minute session available OnDemand only. Click HERE for more information.
Imprinting Puppies with Humans for a Lifetime of Positive Interaction This important course is for anyone who has ever considered or plans to breed a litter of puppies. It demonstrates how to raise healthy, mentally and physically strong puppies by influencing their environment, handling, and attention from pre-birth to permanent home placement at 10-12 weeks of age. Students will learn a proven method of imprinting and handling puppies that affect a canine’s lifelong ability to learn, be trained, and produce a superior companion or competitor because of their exposure to stimuli from birth to 12 weeks. Eight (8) recorded sessions and 2 optional live sessions. Click HERE for more information.
Dog Breeding and Genetics Gain an
understanding of the role genetics play in producing behaviors and aptitudes in dogs. This course will provide a thorough understanding of the nature of heredity; evolutionary and behavioral genetics; the application of genetics to specific breeds; the art of breed selection; breeding for coat and color; improving structural traits and how to control for genetic disorders. Students will come away with an understanding of how genetics influence both the physical and behavioral characteristics of the dog. The emphasis will be on genetics. Six (6) one hour sessions. Available Live or OnDemand. Click HERE for more information.
Canine Behavioral Biology Learn how canine biology influences the behavior of the domesticated dog. Topics to be covered will include genetics, development, socialization, physiology, and neurobiology. Examination of recognizing the differences between natural canine behavior and "behavioral problems" will be a focus of this course. At the end of this course, students will have a clear understanding of how the biology of dogs affects behavior. The emphasis will be on biology. Six (6) one hour sessions. Available Live or OnDemand. Click HERE for more information.
Delivery: Online
Tuition:* $950 (U.S.) or £620.00 (UK) Live or OnDemand
Time Frame: Can be completed at your convenience but the entire Certification must be completed within one year of the start date of the first course. LIVE courses are a specified length of time and must be completed within that time period.
Diploma Information: It is accepted in the scientific community that the principles of natural and selective breeding show themselves in the resulting animal's behavior as well as its physical characteristics. Studies tell us that genetics determine aproximately 60% of behavior and the environment ("how," "when" and "what" in the raising of the dog) determine approximately 40%, as long as those environments are within a normal range of experiences. Since it is possible to exert a great deal of control over the genetic and rearing environments of canines, this Diploma is essential for a complete understanding of dogs in our society.
