Section Two: Building Blocks – Service Dog Constructing Tasks
Add the parts together to construct tasks.
Purpose: The purpose of this course is to add together all the needed parts your dog has learned to build the work or tasks you want your dog to do.
Course Information: This is Part Two of the “task training” section of this curriculum. Following the same format, we will add up the parts you have trained your dog to do, to construct tasks. You may choose the tasks you want to teach your dog. We will focus on how the tasks go together. What to troubleshoot.
This is the “assembly” part of task training. Here, we are adding the parts together as a behavior chain, to develop a task. First we train the “skeleton” pattern of the task. It is as if training a “generic” task.
When your dog is reliable with the “generic” or pattern of the task, we can develop from that “specific” and “specialized” tasks, by changing the target, or making a particular association by adding a new cue. In this way, we can do problem-solving, and have the entire behavior very smooth before we put in any association with objects or targets in your personal environment.
Welcome to the “workshop” area of task construction. This is where you build exactly the work or task you want your dog to do, and have it be functional in your life. Task training is the fusion between the handler and dog that bring the partnership to a new level of functionality.
