The Modular Approach
The Introduction to Service dog task training repeats the critical information about service dogs found in the Getting Ready series and Basics as a lead-in to the Modular Approach for people (and dogs) that are able to go directly into the task training. The Modular Approach makes it possible for EXPERIENCED OWNER-TRAINERS and a QUALIFIED DOG to move right to task training without taking the foundation courses. Be advised: This is NOT the easy way. This is truly for an experienced trainer and a ready dog.
With the modular approach, you could take a dog that is sixteen months old and has standard training, if there are no behavior problems, and in a couple of months, get a task or two trained.
This short course must be taken FIRST:
INTRODUCTION TO SERVICE DOGS AND TASK TRAINING
Purpose: To help you determine if you need/qualify for a Service Dog and based on that need(s); to learn what tasks you require a Service Dog to perform for you. Taking this course will result in you completing a task blueprint based on your needs.
SERVICE DOG FOUNDATION SKILLS: Can YOU Train Your Own Service Dog?
Purpose: This course is a test of you, your ability/willingness/tenacity to train your dog service dog tasks, your dog, and your dog’s ability / willingness / tenacity to perform service dog tasks that you train him/her to do. At the end of the class, you will have trained your dog to do a simple, common service dog task (explained in the course), and submitted a video to the Instructor of you with the dog performing the task correctly.
If you succeed in these two courses: (1) understand the requirements to physically care for and legally qualify for a service dog, and the willingness and ability to create a written plan of your training goal; and (2) train and video a service dog task successfully, you may begin choosing and taking our training modules.
