Service Dog INDIVIDUAL OWNERSHIP AND TRAINING Stream

This stream / series of courses will guide  an individual through the process of the sometimes confusing landscape of service dog ownership as well as helping individuals to train their own Service Dog.

Who should attend?

  • Persons with disabilities who are considering getting a service dog
  • Persons with disabilities who are waiting for a service dog and want to be better prepared
  • Family members of persons with disabilities considering or waiting for a service dog

If the student does NOT have a Service Dog candidate at the present time then the following courses MUST be taken PRIOR to enrolling in any other courses:

I. How to Get a Service Dog: A Guide for Persons with Disabilities who are considering getting a Service Dog.

II. Getting Ready for a Service Dog: A Guide for Persons with Disabilities who are in the process of getting a Service Dog to prepare their lives for a Service Dog.

The following courses MUST BE TAKEN by all students enrolling in this stream whether you have a dog ready to train or not.

III. When You Get a Service Dog: A Guide to help Persons with Disabilities who have gotten a Service Dog to be better able to make an effective transition to living with a full-time canine partner.

IV. Introduction to Service Dogs and Task Training  To help you determine if you need/qualify for a Service Dog and based on that need(s); to learn what tasks you require a Service Dog to perform for you. Taking this course will result in you completing a task blueprint based on your needs.

V. Service Dog Foundation Skills: Can YOU Train Your Own Service Dog? This course is a test of you, your ability/willingness/tenacity to train your dog service dog tasks, your dog, and your dog’s ability / willingness / tenacity to perform service dog tasks that you train him/her to do.

Upon successful completion of these core courses the student candidate will move onto the Module Series where the student will develop the specific skills they need in their personally trained service dog.
