SERVICE DOG FOUNDATION SKILLS: Can YOU Train Your Own Service Dog?

Purpose: This course is a test of you, your ability/willingness/tenacity to train your dog service dog tasks, your dog, and your dog’s ability / willingness / tenacity to perform service dog tasks that you train him/her to do.

The Introduction to Service dog task training repeats the critical information about service dogs found in the Getting Ready series and Basics as a lead-in to the Modular Approach for people (and dogs) that are able to go directly into the task training.  The Modular Approach makes it possible for EXPERIENCED OWNER-TRAINERS and a QUALIFIED DOG to move right to task training without taking the foundation courses. Be advised: This is NOT the easy way. This is truly for an experienced owner trainer and a ready dog.

With the modular approach, you could take a dog that is sixteen months old and has standard training, if there are no behavior problems, and in a couple of months, get a task or two trained.

We have found, after several years, too many people start this project without knowing what they are getting into and if it is something they truly can or want to do. The purpose of this course is to give you that chance to find out!

This course is for the person that SERIOUSLY wants to train their own Service Dog, is legally qualified for a Service Dog, and has the ability to train a task. Training your own Service Dog is not a small task. This course will let you, and us, know if you and/or your dog are at least candidates in becoming a working owner-trained service dog student and hopefully an eventual team. It is intentionally set up to “weed out” anyone or any dog that cannot complete the training of one of the Foundation Skills for a Service Dog.

We do not believe in wasting your time or money if training your own service dog will not work for you and your dog. If you think it will, (and we are here to help you as much as we can) then sign up, dig in, and give it your best shot! If you do not succeed, than you are out very little money and time and you know you must purchase a trained dog. If you do succeed, you have accomplished a major feat and you and your dog, and the team you will build, will be one of your greatest life stories.

Course Information: This course will take you step by step through how to train your dog to go away from you and touch something ten feet away using a click (or other marker) signal and treat. This is a foundation skill for a Service Dog. Many Service Dog tasks include the action of touching something and/or going away from you. We are very specific in exactly how this should look on the video you will be submitting to us to pass this course.
Once the video has been submitted and passed according to written objective criteria, you can then work with the blueprint you developed in the Introduction to Service Dogs and start your Task Training Modules.
Even if you are an experienced dog trainer, you must take this course, train a dog to do the required task, and submit the video for “evaluation” (test) as outlined in the course.
