SERVICE DOG-CORE ELEMENTS

Section One: Foundations Skills for Handlers and Dogs- Service Dog Core Elements

Purpose: To develop manners in public environments that meet the commonly accepted minimum standards for a service dog.

Course Information: This course begins where the Basics course finished. It builds upon the foundation skills learned in the Basics course. Without a solid foundation, you cannot build. If the Basics class was dog training in the classroom, Core Elements is dog training in the laboratory. And the laboratory is the world of your life.

Now that you and your dog have great communication, and you have learned to moderate and direct your dog’s emotional state, we are going to challenge you. We are going to take the training out of your house and into varied environments. Many times, when a handler takes a dog to an unfamiliar environment, the dog does not perform.
Participants in this class are able to demonstrate 90% reliability at step four (verbal cue only) with their dogs on all behaviors and skills covered in the Basics class. All dogs participating in this class will wear flat buckle collars, no choke-chains, pinch-collars or head-halters.
Dogs participating in this class have no major behavior problems, such as aggression, separation anxiety, excessive vocalization, inappropriate elimination, or phobias.
Modern research has established that dogs communicate in many different ways.
This course is designed to establish alignment between the dog and handler. Addressing relationship at the outset enables us to progress with training smoothly and efficiently. Training should be fun and enjoyable for both the dog and the handler. This is dependant upon training being understandable for both dog and handler. This course is comprised of a series of little games and exercises that establish the basis for progressive and complex training to be successful.
