Getting Ready III. WHEN YOU GET A SERVICE DOG

Purpose: A Guide to help Persons with Disabilities who have gotten a Service Dog to be better able to make an effective transition to living with a full-time canine partner.

Course Information: This course assists you in “filling in the blanks” of how to live with your Service Dog. While having a Service Dog increases independence and will considerably widen the realm of your life, interacting with the world partnered with a Service Dog is like traveling in a foreign country. This course presents and discusses the impact having a canine partner in your life will have on your world. Many adaptations and adjustments will need to be made after your canine partner joins your life. Many situations that would never have occurred to you previously will confront you. Sample scenarios in various environments will be presented and explored.

What you can expect to learn in this course:

  • To understand and know how to be responsible for the needs ofyour Service Dog.
  • To adapt your personal environment for living with a canine partner.
    To arrange your personal schedule to match the schedule of your canine partner.
  • To understand andmaintain “house rules” in living with your canine partner.
  • To be aware of expectations professionals and the general public will have about you and your Service Dog and know how to respond.
  • To know how to introduce people in your life and strangers to your Service Dog and control all interactions they have with your canine partner.
  • To locate and participate in appropriate continuing training with your canine partner.
  • To understand protocols and procedures for handling a Service Dog in various public locations.
  • To know how to handle your Service Dog when unusual situations arise.
  • To be able to be an advocate for yourself and your Service Dog when facing challenges.
  • To be able to locate resources when your find yourself in trouble and need help with your Service Dog or with your life with a Service Dog.
