FUNDAMENTALS OF DOG GROOMING

Purpose: This course will teach students how to deal with all different coat types, bathing, drying, dematting and basic trimming including ear & nail care. On completion of this course students will have gained all the knowledge required to work in any of the following areas or use the knowledge required to progress to clipping and styling and work as a professional pet groomer.

Course Information: This certificate can be taken as a stand alone unit or as part of our PROFESSIONAL PET GROOMERS DIPLOMA course. Certification available through the IACC. At the completion of this course graduates would be able to find career opportunites as a grooming assistant, bath & brusher/mobile dog wash operative, trainee groomer, offer bath & brush/tidy-up services from home or as an add on to animal care business eg kennels etc.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of different breeds of dogs and desire to learn professional pet grooming skills.

NOTE: Students who have 6 months experience grooming may apply to opt out of the Fundamentals of Dog Grooming course if enrolled in the Professional Pet Groomers Diploma course, but will be required to provide:

Complete video evidence of competence
Witness testimonies from employer
Passed written exam
before being allowed to pass onto the Grooming and Styling Techniques for Professional Pet Dog Groomers course. On successful completion of the above requirements, the student will gain the Fundamentals of Dog Grooming certifcate and be able to go on to complete the other unit to gain the full diploma. Fee: £50 For assessment of accredited prior achievement.

What students can expect to learn in this course:

  • Breed recognition and kennel club groups
  • Grooming anatomy, terminology and coat types
  • Correct styles for coat types and breeds
  • Students will receive a set of style charts
  • Grooming equipment choice and use, health and safety of both people and pets, handling and restraint & zoonoses
  • Pre-grooming health checks, health/skin problems, parasites, pre-grooming prep, grooming of smooth-coated breeds, non-trimmed breeds, how to deal with ears, nail and glands.
  • How to groom trimmed double coats and basic trimming skills. Full coated breeds and dematting techniques
  • Grooming long-haired breeds, clipping introduction, rough clipping/stripping matted coats prior to bathing and hygiene clipping.
  • Introduction into handstripping techniques.

Resources and Equipment Needed:

Internet access.
Digital camcorder to video homework.
Access to wide variety of friends and families dogs for practicing grooming skills.
If possible, a placement at a grooming salon to watch/voluntary work.
Grooming kit to practice on dogs or access to this equipment… maybe in a salon!
